The hot-mix asphalt carried <strong>20% reclaimed asphalt pavement<\/strong> and used an SBS-modified 58-28H binder.<\/p>\n<p>BioMAG\u2122 combines <strong>50% SIP-1111\u2122 rejuvenator with 50% biopolymer<\/strong>. The formulation brings asphalt-binder rejuvenation and polymer-network support into a single liquid additive for recycled and polymer-modified mixtures.<\/p>\n<figure>\n    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/soyleitechnologies\/wp-content\/plugins\/soylei-product-surfaces\/assets\/images\/sip-1111-demo-projects\/biomag-altoona-ia-2019\/altoona-biomag-paving-diptych.jpg\" alt=\"Two views of crews paving the Altoona BioMAG roadway section.\"><figcaption>Crews place the 20% RAP BioMAG\u2122 mixture on the Altoona roadway.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Lower-temperature performance from the same SBS-modified binder<\/h2>\n<p>Binder testing compared the 58-28H material before modification with the same binder after an <strong>8% BioMAG\u2122 addition<\/strong>. The low critical temperature shifted from <strong>-31.0\u00b0C to -33.3\u00b0C<\/strong>. The high critical temperature moved from 65.4\u00b0C to 64.2\u00b0C, expanding the measured PG temperature interval from 96.4\u00b0C to 97.5\u00b0C.<\/p>\n<p>MSCR recovery at 58\u00b0C increased from <strong>34.81% to 36.05%<\/strong>. The complete comparison recorded a \u0394Tc change from -1.6\u00b0C to -3.0\u00b0C and a J<sub>nr<\/sub> change from 0.9387 to 1.1584 kPa<sup>-1<\/sup>.<\/p>\n<figure>\n    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/soyleitechnologies\/wp-content\/plugins\/soylei-product-surfaces\/assets\/images\/sip-1111-demo-projects\/biomag-altoona-ia-2019\/altoona-binder-results-table.png\" alt=\"Table of Altoona binder PG, Delta Tc, MSCR recovery, Jnr, and mass-loss results.\"><figcaption>Altoona binder results before BioMAG\u2122, after BioMAG\u2122, and after recovery with 20% RAP.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Performance after recovery with 20% RAP<\/h2>\n<p>The binder recovered from the field mixture measured a PG range of <strong>66.2\u00b0C to -30.8\u00b0C<\/strong>, a \u0394Tc of <strong>-2.2\u00b0C<\/strong>, <strong>42.82% MSCR recovery<\/strong> at 58\u00b0C, and J<sub>nr<\/sub> of <strong>0.8138 kPa<sup>-1<\/sup><\/strong>. For comparison, the untreated virgin-binder baseline measured 65.4\u00b0C to -31.0\u00b0C, 34.81% recovery, and J<sub>nr<\/sub> of 0.9387 kPa<sup>-1<\/sup>. The comparison documents the binder response after BioMAG\u2122 entered a production mixture carrying 20% reclaimed asphalt.<\/p>\n<h2>A field-scale blending lesson<\/h2>\n<p>The Altoona material was blended in a tanker and conditioned over four days before paving. Field inspection identified premature polymer crosslinking under that delivery method. Feedback from the terminal, contractor, and Iowa State University team established a clear production requirement for more efficient BioMAG\u2122 mixing and blending.<\/p>\n<h2>What Altoona demonstrates<\/h2>\n<p>Altoona established a field-scale route for pairing binder rejuvenation with polymer support in recycled asphalt.
